Papa Liko

Papa Liko is our youngest keiki class, welcoming students ages 4–6 who are just beginning their hula journey. In this class, haumāna learn the basic movements and fundamentals of hula while developing a love and appreciation for this cultural practice. Students are introduced to simple chants and age-appropriate mele that foster confidence, rhythm, and a connection to Hawaiʻi. The name Papa Liko refers to the tender flower bud, symbolizing these young dancers as they take their first steps in hula. It is our kuleana to nurture and guide them as they begin to grow and flourish within the hālau.

Papa Liko Lehua

Papa Liko Lehua is designed for students ages 6–8 who are ready to build upon the foundation established in Papa Liko. Haumāna continue to strengthen their hula fundamentals while expanding their repertoire of chants and mele. As confidence grows, they begin to tell the stories found within each mele through movement, deepening their focus, expression, and appreciation for hula traditions. The name Papa Liko Lehua represents the flower bud as it continues to mature and prepare to bloom. Like the lehua blossom, these young dancers are growing in both skill and understanding as they deepen their connection to hula and the values of the hālau.

Papa Pua Melia

Papa Pua Melia is our older keiki class for students ages 9–12 who are continuing to grow in their hula practice. Haumāna continue building their foundation by strengthening basic movements, learning chants, and performing age-appropriate mele in both kahiko and ʻauana styles. The name Papa Pua Melia reflects students who have grown beyond the budding stage of Papa Liko and are now young flowers beginning to recognize and develop their beauty while learning how to care for and strengthen their hula skills.

Papa Huli (MOB)

Papa Huli also known as Master of the Basics, is a class focused on strengthening and refining the foundational movements of hula. The goal of this class is to develop a strong and confident hula foundation through repetition, discipline, and attention to detail. The name Huli refers to the stalk or stem of a plant, representing a strong base for growth. It also carries the meaning “to turn,” symbolizing a turning point or renewed commitment to building and mastering the fundamentals of hula.

Papa Kupukupu

Papa Kupukupu is our intermediate class for students ages 13 and older who are continuing to grow in both age and skill level. Haumāna build upon their foundational hula movements while learning a wider repertoire of chants and mele in the traditions and the “tuahine style”. The name Papa Kupukupu symbolizes the young fern as it begins to unfurl and grow. At this stage, students are entering a season of growth and transformation as they come of age, developing greater confidence, responsibility, and understanding of their place within the hālau. Like the kupukupu fern, they continue to grow outward and upward, deepening their ʻike, refining their technique, and strengthening their connection to hula.

Papa Kūlia (Wahine/Kāne)

Papa Kūlia is a class for seasoned dancers who have demonstrated a strong foundation in hula and are continuing to advance in their journey. In this papa, haumāna deepen their understanding of the kuleana of the ʻōlapa while further refining technique, expression, discipline, and cultural understanding.

Papa Mākua

Papa Mākua is an adult class that provides a welcoming space for haumāna to learn and practice hula. The class focuses on foundational hula movements and ʻauana mele while fostering an appreciation for the traditions and values of hula. Traditional kahiko mele may be introduced at Kumu’s discretion, as these mele carry significant kuleana.

Papa ʻOluʻolu (Gracious Ladies)

Papa ʻOluʻolu is a class for our most senior wahine dancers. This class provides a joyful and supportive space for our cherished kūpuna and elder students to gather, move, and continue their connection to hula. Emphasis is placed on enjoying the practice of hula, strengthening community, and honoring the wisdom and grace that these dancers bring to our hālau.
